Climate Change

Climate Change is the most pressing issue currently facing humanity. This is not hyperbole, but a view that is the result of some of the most rigorous and wide-ranging research the international scientific community have ever undertaken.

I have been interested in the issue of climate change for some years now, and have decided that flag that interest more forthrightly on my site. It will contain books I have read, interesting information and my own efforts to reduce my emission or green house gases.

This section of my website reflects this concern about human induced climate change, touches on a range of issues and solutions and reflects both my innate optimism in our creative capacity and innovative minds to nut out cunning solutions and responses and my pessimism in the ability of our political institutions to act with sufficient speed and commitment to avoid the most dangerous aspects of climate change.

Projects (2010)

It’s getting hot in my head: A musical reflection on climate change

This project, currently in development, is a musical journey through my own responses to climate change. It contains some facts and science, though it is not a lecture, it contains challenges for us all, though it is not a polemic, it explores some things we can all do, but it is far from being a fundamentalist rant.

‘Hot in my Head’ is principally a musical event, but one with strong multimedia support, with still images, text and video clips. It is designed to be entertaining, captivating, inspiring, confronting and informative. It will be very much a personal journey, one that other people will be able to relate to. I want all of us to leave this event with a sense of responsibility (though not a burden) but mostly of celebration. This wondrous little green/blue terrestrial planet is our only home; the life we have here is worth celebrating.

Science will lead the way in how we deal with climate change but we must also hold onto our sense of fun, celebration and joy. This merging of science and art is part of a holistic expression of our humanity. Part of the impetus to develop this show is my view that to be human requires a creative interaction between our capacity to reason (expressed par excellence in scientific inquiry) and our capacity to feel. I am as suspicious of those among us who devalue the mind as I am about those who devalue a rich emotional life of wonder, joy and love.
